Buffalo Speaks Reserve,
November 19 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Join the Horicon Marsh Bird Club on Thursday, November 19, at 6:30 p.m. for an informative presentation by Jim Uhrinak, Conservation Chair for the Milwaukee Audubon Society. His presentation, “Audubon Efforts at the Horicon Basin Crossroads,” will explore the natural history, geology, and cultural heritage that make the Horicon Basin such a remarkable place for wildlife and conservation.
Since the retreat of the glaciers, the Horicon Basin has attracted hunters and supported an abundance of wildlife. Today, it remains a treasure for restoration and conservation, offering opportunities to recover wildlife populations, restore native habitats, and make new discoveries about the landscape we share.
As June Hlem wrote, “Discovery is the greatest human pleasure.” The ongoing recovery of wildlife, progress in habitat restoration, and unexpected discoveries throughout the Horicon Basin continue to inspire those who work to protect it.
Uhrinak brings a broad background in wildlife ecology, natural history, and cultural landscape preservation to his conservation work. He studied Wildlife Ecology and Veterinary Anatomy at the University of Minnesota and has an interest in interpreting American Indian legends. A consulting arborist and life member of the International Oak Society, he also works to restore oak savanna remnants—unique landscapes shaped by both natural processes and human activity.
One of his major areas of focus is Buffalo Speaks Reserve, a 97-acre property in Dodge County where restoration efforts support native prairie, woodland, and grassland habitats. Through native planting initiatives and volunteer involvement, the reserve is helping improve habitat for birds and other wildlife. Uhrinak also works with members of the Menominee community to incorporate traditional cultural burning practices into land management, helping maintain grassland habitats while honoring Indigenous ecological knowledge and the area’s cultural history.
Through his work with the Milwaukee Audubon Society and local restoration efforts, Uhrinak highlights the connections between healthy habitats, wildlife conservation, and the human stories woven into Wisconsin’s landscapes.
