Please join PhotoMidwest for an approximately 3-hour introductory bird photography class at the Horicon Marsh Visitor Center beginning at 4pm on Saturday, May 13. The class begins with a classroom session followed by about 2 hours photographing in Horicon Marsh. If there is bad weather, DNR staff will have mounted specimens to practice photographing indoors at the Visitor Center. Advance registration is strongly encouraged because the class is limited to 15 photographers. Cost is $25.
Prerequisites: Bird photography is one of the most demanding types of photography for both the equipment and the photographer. This class is intended for photographers using a full function digital camera (as opposed to a cell phone) with the capability to zoom to 200 mm focal length. If you have questions about the adequacy of your camera equipment for this class, please email your concerns to Camera@PhotoMidwest.Org before you register for this class.
The class will cover basic camera settings for bird photography such as shutter setting, burst rate, auto-focus settings, and the trade-offs between the aperture f-stop and the ISO setting. We will have volunteers who are familiar with the major camera brands to help you with your settings. We will then cover how to determine the best time of day, location, weather, and aspects of bird behavior to give the best potential for good photographs birds in flight and at rest. Finally, we will review basic safety and ethical/animal welfare considerations.
