SUMMARY:Kestrel Nest Box Program - Jenn Scheiderman
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 16\, 2026 \, from 6:30–8:00 pm\, at the Horicon Marsh Education Center for an engaging and informative presentation by Jennifer Schneiderman of the Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance.\nOften called North America’s smallest falcon\, the American Kestrel is a colorful and charismatic raptor—but it’s also a species in decline. During this program\, Jenn will explore the kestrel’s ecology\, life history\, and current population status\, shedding light on the challenges these birds face across our region.\nYou’ll also learn how landowners and volunteers throughout Wisconsin are partnering with the Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance to create and maintain critical habitat. From nest box programs to hands-on conservation efforts\, this is a great opportunity to discover how everyday people can make a meaningful impact on kestrel survival.\nIf you’ve ever considered getting involved in conservation\, this program will give you practical ways to help—right in your own backyard. Be sure to also learn more about the Kestrel Nest Box Monitoring & Banding Program during the event.\nJenn Schneiderman is a dedicated volunteer with the Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance’s kestrel program. She earned her Master’s degree in Wildlife Ecology from UW–Madison in 2020 and currently works as a Conservation Technician with Sauk County Land Resources and Environment. Her work focuses on restoring habitats that benefit both wildlife and people. Outside of work\, Jenn enjoys birding\, hiking\, gardening\, and a variety of “nerdy” pursuits.\nThe meeting is open to the public and will be held at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center\, located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI.\nThose who wish to attend via Zoom must register in advance here:  https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/IZ1Fl30rT9WHZ8zg5G12Zg

SUMMARY:Flying into Wildlife & Wind Energy- David Drake
DESCRIPTION:Wind energy offers many benefits\, including a renewable source of energy that does not produce air or water\npollution. A drawback to generating energy from wind\, however\, is the negative effect it can have on flying\nwildlife (birds and bats). These effects can range from lethal ones due to blunt force trauma from striking the\nturbine infrastructure to non-lethal ones like habitat displacement. My presentation will provide some\nbackground about wind energy and then focus on research my lab and I conducted at the Forward Energy wind\nfarm in Dodge and Fond du Lac Counties. \nDavid Drake is a Professor and Extension Wildlife Specialist in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology\nat the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research and extension programs primarily focus on wildlife and\nwildlife damage management in human-dominated landscapes. \nThose who wish to attend via Zoom must register in advance here: https://us02web.zoom.us/…/register/LEAbtmGGR8uTzhJ4VScJFA\n\n

SUMMARY:Andrew Farnsworth- Cornell Lab What’s new in bird migration? A primer of today’s knowledge
DESCRIPTION:One of the most fun and exciting aspects of directing and participating in the BirdCast project over the last 25 years has been reading and responding to the enormous array of questions posed by careful observers\, curious bystanders\, and attentive experts. In this evening’s discussion\, we will cover everything from what’s new in the world of bird migration\, migration monitoring\, and more broadly in the ways we learn and develop both. We will cover birding\, science\, technology\, and try to have as much fun and novel insight as possible! \nAndrew Farnsworth is a Visiting Scientist in the Center for Avian Population Studies at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Andrew began birding at age 5 and quickly developed his long-standing fascinations with bird migration.  He and his collaborators employ science to educate and to engage audiences in conservation actions\, notably with respect to reducing light pollution impacts on nocturnally migrating birds.  He lives in New York\, NY with his wife Patricia and two daughters Aja and Elle. \nThe meeting is open to the public and is held at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI. You can also join us via Zoom. \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/gZg32qkIT4u-RIODpwylnw

SUMMARY:November Meeting: Meet the Purple Martins of Mayville Elementary School
DESCRIPTION:Join The Horicon Marsh Bird Club on Thursday\, November 20th\, 2025 at 6:30pm at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center for a program featuring Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Educator\, Liz Herzmann. The meeting is open to the public and is held at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI. \nLiz Herzmann has been partnering with the Mayville Elementary School for a number of years by providing on-site environmental education utilizing their school prairie and nearby Ziegler Park.  After the loss of a bat box due to weathering\, Liz suggested placing a Purple Martin Nesting structure as it fit the habitat needed.  Purple Martins are the largest bird in the swallow family and are amazing acrobats in the air.  They eat countless flying insects\, a favorite being dragonflies\, and even drink water by scooping it up in flight!  They are a colony nesting bird\, which means they love nesting in groups in hollowed out cavities.  Now nearly all Purple Martin colonies east of the Rocky Mountains rely solely on human made structures. \nThis presentation will take you through the journey of local 4th grade students and how persistence can pay off!  A big thank you goes to the Horicon Marsh Bird Club who donated funds for some of the fun accessories needed to help this project along the way.  We hope you join us as we highlight how the Horicon Marsh Bird Club works with our local communities. \nLiz Herzmann is the Wildlife Educator for the Department of Natural Resources at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center and has worked there since 2009. She is responsible for the educational programming and special events held at the Education Center. These programs allow people of all ages to experience the wildlife and natural resources of Horicon Marsh. Previous to working at the Education Center\, Liz worked for Northern Illinois University teaching outdoor education at a field campus to 4th-8th grade students. \nFor questions or more information contact Liz Herzmann at 920-210-9054 or elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join The Horicon Marsh Bird Club on Thursday\, September 18th\, 2025 at 6:30pm at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center for a program featuring Blake Richard of the United States Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS). The meeting is open to the public and is held at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI. \nMr. Richard will present his experiences as a project volunteer with USFWS in Utqiagvik\, Alaska. His professional work has focused on the conservation of endangered Steller’s and Spectacled Eider ducks\, while his time in Alaska provided unique opportunities for observing rare birds\, encountering polar bears under the midnight sun\, experiencing snowfall in July\, and participating in local cultural events such as nalukataq. The Inupiaq name for Steller’s Eider\, Igniqauqtuq\, means “the bird who sat in fire.” \nOriginating from Wisconsin and raised near the Ruffed Grouse Capital\, Mr. Richard developed a strong connection to wildlife from a young age. Summers spent on the Rock River and autumns hunting in Spooner\, WI played an influential role in his appreciation for natural resources. Before joining the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife\, he attended Northland College and gained valuable experience working in Alaska with Ducks Unlimited\, the Alaska Department of Fish & Game\, and USFWS. His passion for avian species\, particularly waterfowl\, and dedication to conservation continue to grow\, complemented by interests in photography and writing.\nThis meeting will be available in person and on Zoom.
