SUMMARY:Screeches\, Squawks and\, Squeals of the Marsh
DESCRIPTION:Price: Free\, no registration required \nTrip Leader: Liz Herzmann \nNo registration required \nDuring the day\, Horicon Marsh is a relaxing and tranquil place to enjoy nature. But the dark mysteries of the marsh at night can be “chilling” to those not accustomed to the sounds of nocturnal creatures. Hike leader Liz Herzmann will dispel the myths of the night as she helps you identify the many nocturnal sounds that come from within the cattails. This program will be conducted outside with easy walking but possible uneven terrain so dress warm and bring a low powered flashlight. Meet at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center on Hwy. 28 between Mayville and Horicon. Please use the lower entrance on the south side of the building.

SUMMARY:Photographing Birds in Their Environment
DESCRIPTION:3:00pm-4:30pm: Presentation\, Q & A and breaking into small groups.\n4:30pm-6pm: Groups photographing in the Marsh. \nPlease join PhotoMidwest instructors Cynthia Carlson and Ralph Russo for an introductory bird photography class at the Horicon Marsh Visitor Center beginning at 3:00pm on Saturday\, May 9.  Advance registration is strongly encouraged because the class is limited to 20 photographers. Cost is $25. \nThis introductory bird photography workshop is designed for enthusiasts who want to move beyond basic snapshots and master the art of capturing avian life.  The session begins with a classroom presentation focused on essential camera settings\, lighting situations\, image composition\, basic post processing and the critical role of bird behavior in achieving successful shots. Participants then transition to a guided field experience to practice these techniques in Horicon’s natural environment. The workshop emphasizes a practical approach with a reduced focus on technical jargon\, making it ideal for those using functional cameras with a focal length of at least 200mm who are eager to improve their timing\, lighting\, and ethical field practices.   \nVolunteers who are familiar with the major camera brands will be on hand to help you with your settings.  If you have questions about the adequacy of your camera equipment for this class\, please email your concerns to Camera@PhotoMidwest.org before you register for this class. \nRegistration with payment required.

SUMMARY:Bird Lab
DESCRIPTION:Bring your family out for the Horicon Marsh Bird Festival but\, before the kids hit the trails in search of birds\, bring them into the Visitor Center to make their own binoculars! We will have a make-and-take station all weekend where kids can decorate their own binoculars with stickers\, markers and more! \nJoin us for a bird banding activity with a twist where you get to be the bird! After getting trapped in our “mist net\,” we will take your measurements just like if you were a real bird. You will even get a band to take home. Learn the important role bird banding plays in conservation with this hands-on activity. \nFrom 9:30am-3pm try out your bird skills!  Can you run faster than a Peregrine Falcon can fly? Can you flap your arms faster than a hummingbird can flap their wings? Test your athletic ability at the Bird Olympics! You will be competing against the best birds in their sport. Have fun trying to beat their adaptations and learn some cool facts along the way. Visit the classrooms to try your hand\, or should we say beak\, at eating like a bird.  Find out why a bird’s beak is critical to their survival. \nFor more information\, contact Liz Herzmann at 920-210-9054 or elizabeth.herzmann@wisconsin.gov. \nFree. No registration required.

SUMMARY:Kestrel Nest Box Program - Jenn Scheiderman
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 16\, 2026 \, from 6:30–8:00 pm\, at the Horicon Marsh Education Center for an engaging and informative presentation by Jennifer Schneiderman of the Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance.\nOften called North America’s smallest falcon\, the American Kestrel is a colorful and charismatic raptor—but it’s also a species in decline. During this program\, Jenn will explore the kestrel’s ecology\, life history\, and current population status\, shedding light on the challenges these birds face across our region.\nYou’ll also learn how landowners and volunteers throughout Wisconsin are partnering with the Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance to create and maintain critical habitat. From nest box programs to hands-on conservation efforts\, this is a great opportunity to discover how everyday people can make a meaningful impact on kestrel survival.\nIf you’ve ever considered getting involved in conservation\, this program will give you practical ways to help—right in your own backyard. Be sure to also learn more about the Kestrel Nest Box Monitoring & Banding Program during the event.\nJenn Schneiderman is a dedicated volunteer with the Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance’s kestrel program. She earned her Master’s degree in Wildlife Ecology from UW–Madison in 2020 and currently works as a Conservation Technician with Sauk County Land Resources and Environment. Her work focuses on restoring habitats that benefit both wildlife and people. Outside of work\, Jenn enjoys birding\, hiking\, gardening\, and a variety of “nerdy” pursuits.\nThe meeting is open to the public and will be held at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center\, located at N7725 Highway 28\, Horicon\, WI.\nThose who wish to attend via Zoom must register in advance here:  https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/IZ1Fl30rT9WHZ8zg5G12Zg
